These pics are Parker's first and last day of 7th grade. They really sum thing up for me. That first day you're all geeked out, new clothes, new gear. You will do ridiculous poses for your mom because you think it will be over sooner if you cooperate.
Then there is the last day. When you woke up late, threw on the shirt at the top of the laundry pile and your mom only has the time/patience/sanity for one picture.
But what I'll remember from Parker's seventh grade year is that it was the year he grew taller than his Mama.
*dramatic pause*
I am a fairly tall woman at 5'9, so I thought I would have a wee bit longer. Looking him in the eye has been surreal. It really is true, you will always think of them as wee babes, never the hulking, moody teen that asks "What's for dinner, Mom?" (in an increasingly deeper voice!)
Well done, Parker. On surviving what could be argued as the most awkward year of anyone's life. For your excellence in school, testing better than 11th graders. And continuing to be "a pleasure to have in class."

I soak in these posts about older boys and mothering them and I store them up for my future.
ReplyDeleteHe's a keeper!
Matt's mom warned me and I'll admit, it did help when the day came when I was looking him in the eyes.
DeleteAwwww I love this!
ReplyDeleteThanks Allison. Boys are so great but the growing up into big boys can be so heart breaking. Also, you have a blog?! Yay!
DeleteThis makes me cry for so many reasons! First- I can't believe he's that old- yuck! Second- my boys will be looking me in the eye waaaay to soon (as you know, I am NOT a tall woman!) Third- when did he turn so handsome? Are the girls banging down the door yet? He's such an awesome kid- you guys have done an amazing job with your boys and you continue to be an inspiration to a fellow boy mom :)
ReplyDeleteYes, boy mom solidarity, I love it :) The girls ARE lined up! uggghhhh.....
DeleteKeep doing a great job and being an inspiration to me. Luckily my boys have Nate and I for parents....aka the latest bloomers in the class. Lol! Maybe I have a couple more years. ☺
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny because Matt & I were the same! Gosh, cannot believe any of us made it out of junior high :/
Delete7th grade...I agree it was the most awkward. That was the year I wore my rodeo outfit that I had got for my birthday to wear to Grangville for the rodeo that 4th of July. I got up, put on my turquoise wranglers, white button down blouse with embroidered cowboy boots on it, my fancy black, turquoise and hot pink short boots and of course- a bolo. Why the HELL didn't my Mom stop me? It's crazy how you can remember moments like that this many years later!!! Traumatizing!
ReplyDeleteThis Parker of yours- love knowing him cyberly and hope the next year is as good as the past one.
Ahahaha! That is an awesomely vivid memory! I have a similar one involving my souvenir tee shirt from the Monterey Bay Aquarium :) I was a year older so I should have warned you!!
DeleteIt is sweet we can learn about and love each other from afar, I love it!
Crying with laughter over here at Megan's comment of why in the "heck" (sorry, I am physically unable to swear)did her mom let her wear that outfit to the rodeo? Uh .... because I BOUGHT it for her! Childhood memories -- we all got 'em and some can haunt us forever. I love your writing ... so fun Aubrey and I agree with all, a very handsome boy.
